Hello Fellow EMPR200 Classmates,
My name is Mackenzie Hinshelwood and I am a second year Commerce student. I was born and raised in Newmarket Ontario and I am the first generation on both sides of my family to be attending university. I am an extremely outgoing and ambitious person who is always seeking out new opportunities to learn and grow.
As a commerce student I have a passion for business, in particular human resources and logistics. The interest in the fields makes Work and Employment Relations in Canada especially interesting to me because of how applicable it can be to these portfolios due to the high level of human interaction and policy. In addition to this, I believe that a good background knowledge in employment relations is vital in today’s society as we are in a world of constant change and movement. Being able to understand address challenges when they arises can be a great tool to have. That being said, I am hoping to develop not only my employment relations skills, but also my interpersonal skills in this course by analyzing cases and scenarios that are applicable to today’s workforce. I’m hoping by the end of this course I will have the skills to be comfortable approaching tense or delicate situations with confidence and intelligence.

Congrats on being the first in your family to attend university, I am the first in mine as well! I can relate to a lot of the points you touched on in your introduction, as I too wish to improve upon my interpersonal and conflict resolution skills, and believe that a solid understanding of employment relations is a major benefit to an employer/employee in any workplace.

That’s really cool that you are first generation in your family to go to university. I am the first generation to go to university on my dad’s side, and I know how interesting conversations with family can be in that dynamic.
